Gap Between the Ages is the eighty-second episode of the InuYasha anime.
Synopsis[]
- As Inuyasha and the others wonder where Naraku might have vanished to, Kagome returns to the modern era to catch up on her school work.
- Inuyasha comes to the modern era to bring Kagome back, but ends up staying with her for a few days.
Summary[]
Sango and Miroku discover that Naraku abandoned the castle and has disappeared without a trace. Inuyasha is furious, given that Naraku may actually be vulnerable enough for him to kill now.
Back in the Modern era, Kagome has no time to feel guilty about leaving her friends in the feudal age: she has a test in two days, and is far behind in both her studies and her notes. She tries to prepare, to no avail: first, she tries to copy her friends notes, but all copy machines are either being used or are broken, and second, she tries calling her friends for the notes, but forgets why she called in the first place hours later. Back in the Feudal Era, Inuyasha quickly becomes impatient waiting for her. Shippō remarks that Kagome said she'd be gone a few days, while Sango points out that they've lost track of Naraku before, and Inuyasha should get some rest while they plan their next move. Inuyasha retorts that he doesn't become tired as easily as humans, which Miroku says is exactly the point; they don't have his stamina, and he can't expect them to keep up with him.
In the forest, Kikyō sends the Shinidamachūs to hunt for Naraku's demonic aura, but they remain unable to find him. Meanwhile, Kagura and Kohaku fly toward an unknown destination. Kagura thinks to herself, that Naraku's last order had been to retrieve the Shikon Jewel shard from Kohaku's corpse, but since he remains alive, her orders are moot. Her initial assessment of Kohaku, as a mindless puppet, was incorrect; he could have killed Rin and let himself be killed by Sesshōmaru, but in both cases he hesitated, ultimately failing to carry out his orders. She warns him that he won't live long if he keeps defying Naraku, but Kohaku doesn't answer. Kagura reminds herself that she's hardly one to talk.
That evening, Sango sits outside, musing over Naraku and Kohaku's disappearance; Miroku soon arrives and sits next to her. Shippō tells Kaede and Inuyasha that, according to Kagome, Miroku intends to "woo" Sango, and that she's apparently been expecting it. Miroku confirms that Sango is worried about her brother, telling her sincerely not to worry too much, hard though it might be. When he starts to leave, saying she'd probably rather be alone, Sango is surprised; given what she knows about him, she apparently expected him to try "something lecherous". Miroku stupidly replies that if that's what she wanted, she should've said so sooner. He then puts his hand on her chest, earning himself a ferocious slap to the face that is audible from Kaede's hut. Shippō remarks, "Nice contact on that one!" while Inuyasha thinks they have all gone crazy.
Back in the modern era, Kagome has no other way but to study the test but she felt so confusing. The next morning, Inuyasha arrives to her house which causes much confusion and delay for poor Kagome; she orders him not to go anywhere outside. However, after she leaves for school, Kagome's mother tells Inuyasha that she forgot her lunch and asks him to deliver it to her. While on his way, Inuyasha becomes an unexpected hero by punching a robber on the run from the police (causing him to muse that "Kagome's world" is more dangerous than he thought). He then saves a little girl from a fire, though he becomes annoyed when she tugs on his dog ears. At Kagome's school, Kagome becomes embarrassed when Inuyasha arrives and is almost spotted by a student, but Kagome says "Sit!" at the last moment, causing Inuyasha to fall to the ground (Kagome gets punished for speaking out loud during study time). Inuyasha gives Kagome her lunch and, as a kind way for what he went through, offers some to him; however, he had already had his 'share' (in the other word, he has eaten half of her lunch). Later, Kagome tries to get notes from Hōjō, but he instead gives her some health food for her bizarre illnesses.

That evening at her house, Kagome learns from the family TV of Inuyasha's goings-on earlier that day, and the drawing by the child causes Inuyasha and the family surprised. The child put her drawing down as Inuyasha surprised that the cap he was wearing as he marvels at how strange the "weird box" is. Soon, Kagome tries to do her homework and study, but Inuyasha keeps peering over her shoulder. She tells him to "Sit!" and asks Sōta, her little brother, to keep Inuyasha company. Sōta does so by having a bath with Inuyasha, but the hot water causes Inuyasha to barge in Kagome's room naked; this freaks Kagome out and throws various items at him and telling him to leave. To her horror, the distraction makes her forget her math formulas. Later, after Sōta dries his hair with a hair dryer, Inuyasha tries some curry offered to him by Kagome's mother, but it causes his tongue to burn since Kagome's mother had put too much spice; Kagome sarcastically remarks that he can't handle curry, but will blow off "a gaping hole in his gut." During the late part of the night, Inuyasha silently stares at Kagome as she works; this makes it hard for her to concentrate and she offers that he get some rest, to which he refuses. Kagome goes back to work, but looks back at Inuyasha, who is now asleep. At first she seems annoyed, but then smiles as she realizes that she has never seen Inuyasha sleep so soundly; she thinks to herself, that given how much energy he burns through, he probably gets more tired than any of their other friends. She tells him to sleep well, at least for one night.
The next day, Kagome takes her test, but she can't seem to stay awake. Later, she and Inuyasha arrive back in the Feudal era with Miroku and Shippō greeting them. Inuyasha notes how Kagome seems tired and she states that he had hogged her bed all night, to which she shouts that her life stinks. Shippō tries to cheer her up by stating how sunny it is.
