Nanafushi (ナナフシ) was a mantis yōkai who fought Inuyasha. Nanafushi was capable of putting up a barrier, so Inuyasha decided to fight him in order to complete his quest of gaining the ability to break barriers. However, Nanafushi's barrier was very weak and was easily destroyed by the Wind Scar.[1]
History[]
Nanafushi invaded the territory of the mountain cat yōkai, and created a barrier that prevented them from re-entering. Bunza, a member of the tribe, sought out the swordsmith Tōtōsai in order to receive the training needed to save his tribe's home. Nanafushi captured Bunza's father after he attempted to confront Nanafushi. After hearing about his father's capture from Torako, Bunza took a sword from Tōtōsai to fight Nanafushi by himself. Inuyasha accompanied Bunza, and convinced him to let him help since they were "brothers" of Tōtōsai's tutelage. Bunza attacked Nanafushi's barrier to no avail. Inuyasha stepped in to confront Nanafushi. He appeared from some trees and spewed a lot of poison. Inuyasha drew Tessaiga, and broke the barrier with the Kaze no Kizu. Nanafushi then attacked Inuyasha. His limb was cut in half by Tessaiga, but then regenerated. Nanafushi attacked again, but Inuyasha jumped to evade. He was able to strike Nanafushi's body, disintegrating it.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Barrier: Nanafushi can create a barrier, but Inuyasha easily destroys it with the Kaze no Kizu.
- Shōki: It is capable of spewing a poison gas from its mouth.
- Regeneration: Nanafushi is able to regenerate parts of its body. After having one of its limbs cut off by Inuyasha's Tessaiga, it immediately regenerates it back.

- Nanafushi's seiyū, Kazunari Tanaka, also voiced several characters from Rumiko Takahashi's anthology series Rumic Theater.
